GM Issues Cop Car Recall

General Motors announced that it’s recalling approximately 47,000 of its Chevrolet Caprice and Pontiac G8 sedans sold in North America due to faulty seat belts. The GM cop car recall includes Chevrolet Caprice vehicles from model years 2011 through 2013 and Pontiac G8 vehicles from model years 2008 and 2009. In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), GM states that the flexible steel cables that connect seat belts to a vehicle at the outside of the driver seat may break after repeated stress. Drivers or passengers can unwittingly sit on the cable while entering the car, causing it to bend. As a result, the seat belt may not be able to restrain the passenger in the event of an automobile accident. While no injuries related to defective seatbelts have been reported, it can be assumed that GM was motivated to issue this cop car recall since all new Chevrolet Caprice vehicles are exclusive to police units across the country. Caprice and Pontiac G8 vehicles included in this latest recall can be taken to dealerships that will replace the relevant seat belt parts at no charge. Last year was the year of the recall, with nearly 64 million vehicles taken out of circulation according to NHTSA estimates. What’s more, vehicle recalls haven’t exactly slowed down during the first half of 2015, most notably with the massive recall of millions of American automobiles outfitted with Takata airbags.
